Why did my pillow fall apart?

A common question. Soft pillows have a number of issues working against their longevity. First the material itself. To remain "soft" requires a pillow formula that by nature will cause the foam to fail.

Second and what you can do, is the cavity between the water surface and spa cover can easily become corrosive. The organics in the water plus water treatment chemicals will fill the cavity a create an atmosphere that corrodes the pillows along with other plastics. What you can do is help lesson that gas by a number of approaches: a. use the minimal amount of chemicals to keep your water balance and clean, b. if you have a 24/7 circulation pump and using an ozonator, switch to a UV design sanitizer which doesn't create corrosive gas, c) open the spa cover regularly to allow gas to escape, and d) during warmer months create an easy way for air to escape the hot tub. Many use a shim to lift up the cover and allow gas and heat to escape. Just note that as gas/heat escapes so does moisture so check you water level regularly.

Third obvious but least desired for most is remove the pillows when the spa is not in regular use. You can also treat the pillows with a expectorant designed for marine (water) application.
